Self-care looks different to everyone. Swipe to find out which one works best for you!
Physical self-care involves exercising regularly, eating nutritious foods, staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, and maintaining good hygiene.
Mental self-care includes mindfulness, meditation, and breathing exercises to reduce stress, as well as focusing on positivity, practising gratitude, setting goals, and taking regular breaks.
Social self-care emphasises staying connected with friends and family, building a strong support network, and establishing healthy boundaries.
Creative self-care allows for self-expression and joy through hobbies and activities that spark passion and creativity. Prioritising these aspects of self-care helps maintain balance and enhances overall quality of life.

Self-care empowers individuals, families, and communities to maintain health, prevent disease, and manage illness—with or without healthcare support. It encompasses emotional, spiritual, mental, social, and physical well-being. In such a competitive society which drives people to put work first, self-care tends to be neglected. In fact, neglecting self-care includes issues like: low energy, difficulty concentrating, poor sleep, increased stress-related symptoms, loss of interest in favorite activities and worsening mental health. Taking time to recharge isn’t selfish—it boosts happiness, energy, and overall well-being, allowing you to show up as your best self.

Self-care is often misunderstood, leading many to neglect its importance. Contrary to common belief, self-care is not selfish, it allows you to recharge and show up as your best self for both yourself and those around you. Additionally, self-care tends to be viewed as something that should be earned, which is not true—it is a fundamental need. Self-care is not just for women; everyone can benefit from healthy routines and nurturing activities. Lastly, self-care is commonly perceived to be expensive and time-consuming, but in reality, it can be simple, accessible, and easily incorporated into daily life. ![[#3 - Are all marketed probiotics beneficial? What should consumers take note of?]
With various probiotic supplements being available in the marketplace, it poses the question on whether all of them are beneficial? Not always. While probiotics have shown promise for various health purposes as shared in our earlier post, it’s important to approach them critically. Many probiotics are sold as dietary supplements, which are not regulated by the FDA before they hit the market. Manufacturers do not require FDA approval when making claims about how the product affects body structure or function, however, they are not allowed to make health claims without FDA’s consent. In Singapore, there have been cases of fake probiotic products sold online with harmful substances resulting in ill health in consumers. Hence, consumers should be careful when producing probiotics as some products may not contain the probiotics mentioned, or even contain unlisted or harmful microorganisms.
When choosing probiotics, pay attention to details like the bacterial strains and colony-forming units (CFU). It is advisable to conduct your own research on the benefits of the strains included in the product as only strains with proven benefits for a person’s condition should be used. As a general guideline, a probiotic product should contain at least 1 billion CFUs of live bacterial cultures, with some of the most well-researched probiotics belonging to the genera Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Bacillus, and Saccharomyces boulardii. Minimally, consumers are advised to look for products verified by credible experiments or experts. Remember, science is still evolving, and there is no definitive evidence that probiotics consistently benefit healthy individuals. While probiotics can offer benefits, their effectiveness varies by strain, dose, and individual needs. As such, stay informed, do your research, and make well-informed decisions with your healthcare provider when necessary.

Our bodies host a vast array of microbes, with key populations residing in the mouth, gut, and skin. Probiotics are beneficial microorganisms, primarily bacteria, similar to those naturally present in the gut, playing a crucial role in maintaining microbial balance. They help support our health by competing against harmful bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites that might otherwise thrive in our system. Many probiotic products contain beneficial bacteria designed to provide our body with a healthy microbiota. Although the majority of the probiotics in the market targets the gut, emerging research suggests that the gut microbiome interacts with multiple body systems, including the brain, immune system, and endocrine system. Some studies indicate potential links between gut health and mood, cognitive function, immune response, inflammation and metabolism. However, while probiotics show promise in supporting gastrointestinal health, immunity, and metabolic balance, research is still ongoing to fully understand their effects. Though solid conclusions have yet to be drawn, some healthcare providers recommend probiotics for their potential benefits in reducing the risk of gastrointestinal disorders, enhancing immune function, and promoting overall well-being.

![[#1 - What are Probiotics? Where can they be found?]
Did you know that the global probiotics market size is calculated at USD 114 billion in 2025 and is forecasted to reach around USD 374 billion by 2034? In recent years, we have seen an increase in popularity of probiotic products with new companies jumping on the hype train with their own products. Have you wondered what exactly are probiotics and ever considered getting them to improve your health? In that case, our 3 posts are a great start to learn more about the field.
Probiotics play a vital role in supporting gut health. Probiotics are living microorganisms, typically bacteria or certain types of yeasts, that are intended to provide health benefits when consumed. Probiotics can be obtained from supplements, as well as foods. These foods are prepared through bacterial fermentation, such as yoghurt, kefir, cheese, and kimchi. In supplements, there will be various unique probiotic strains indicated by labels on the packaging stating the Colony Forming Units (CFUs) and types of species present.
This is not to be confused with prebiotics. Prebiotics are carbohydrates, often dietary fibres, that serve as food for the beneficial bacteria already in your gut. Together, probiotics and prebiotics can be combined into synbiotics. Understanding these differences can help you make informed choices about improving your gut health. ![[#3: Ways to cope with rising temperature / heat exhaustion]
Heat exhaustion may lead to heat stroke if not treated promptly. Here are some ways you can cope with rising temperatures and handle heat exhaustion if you were to experience it.
1. Keep yourself cool by taking cool showers to reduce our body temperature. You can also wear light and loose-fitting clothing that you feel comfortable in.
2. Plan ahead. Plan essential activities for the coolest part of the day. If you do have to go outside, take a water bottle with you, seek shade, and wear a hat and sunscreen for skin protection. During extreme heat, cancel or reschedule non-essential outings. Try to stay indoors or under shade to minimise the chances of our body from overheating.
3. Stay hydrated at all times by drinking cold fluids. Stick to water or sports drinks. Avoid drinking any alcoholic beverages as it can lead to dehydration. During days when you are exposed to extreme heat, keep drinking water before you feel thirsty, especially if outdoors and performing physical activity.

![[#2: Heat exhaustion, its causes and symptoms]
Heat exhaustion is a heat-related illness that occurs after prolonged exposure to high temperatures, often accompanied by dehydration. It usually occurs when performing strenuous outdoor activities, such as exercising or engaging in sports, particularly during peak heat hours, between 10am to 4pm. If left untreated, heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke, which is a life threatening condition.
Heat exhaustion is characterized by a myriad of symptoms including fatigue, dizziness, fainting, thirst, nausea, profuse sweating and a fast heart rate. These symptoms appear as the body’s thermoregulatory mechanisms are overwhelmed, and are unable to cool the body down after exposure to excessive heat.
If any of these symptoms arise, promptly seek shade, rest and hydrate.

![[#1: What is causing rising temperatures?]
The escalation in global temperatures primarily stems from shifts in greenhouse gas levels. Certain gases act as a barrier, trapping the sun's warmth and leading to global warming. Human activities are elevating the concentration of key gases like Carbon Dioxide, Methane, and Nitrous Oxide.
Carbon Dioxide notably contributes the most to this phenomenon, with its concentration reaching 48% of pre-industrial levels by 2020. The sources of escalating emissions include the combustion of fossil fuels (coal, oil, and gas), deforestation diminishing the natural carbon dioxide regulators (trees), and methane production from livestock farming, particularly cows and sheep.
These factors contribute to the global rise in surface temperatures, impacting regions like Singapore, where the perpetually warm climate leads to an increase in incidents related to heat exhaustion.
